In October 2007 Anne Brichto was the toast of the Welsh Assembly and Houses of Parliament after she led her home town Hay on Wye to beat 52 other towns for the coveted prize of being twinned with Timbuktu. After the celebrations, Anne’s daughter was diagnosed with anorexia, by December 2007 she was given less than 3 weeks to live and teenagers in Bridge End began committing suicide. These events have fuelled Anne’s quest to travel across Mali to take part in the lives of ordinary Malians in an effort to learn what we have forgotten to instil in our youth.
We spent a hectic three days in Hay on Wye at the beginning of the literature festival so we could catch Anne and her family at their busiest. They were certainly at their busiest and we were at our most weird at times! | Here are some photos taken on Anne's first trip to Mali and our first trip to Mali a year later. |
